How to Get Clue Scrolls Fast in OSRS
This guide contains ways to get Old School RuneScape clue scroll from Beginner to Master clues and some information about the new Mimic Boss. Content for this article was inspired by Theoatrix OSRS's video.
In this article, I will be going from Beginner through to Master clues, showing the best and fastest ways to get them.
Beginner clues
Most low level F2P monsters in RuneScape 2007 drop these clues – with the exception of a couple of monsters like level 1 Rats and small Spiders.
Goblins
Cows
Chickens
Giant Rats
Giant Spiders
Obor (100% Drop)
Bryophyta (100% Drop)
Men & Women
Moss Giants
Skeletons
Monsters like Cows, Goblins, and Chickens all drop Beginner clues. Although, higher level F2P monsters like Lesser Demons or Ankous don’t drop them.
You can also receive Beginner clues from clue bottles, geodes or nests from Fishing, Mining, and Woodcutting.
Getting a clue drop from skilling rolls similarly to getting a pet, in that you have a better chance of getting a clue drop with a higher skill level. Also, the chance of getting a clue varies with the tier of rock, tree, or fish that you are getting.
For example, you will have a much better chance of getting a clue scroll mining Runite ore than Copper ore.
Upon getting a clue drop from skilling, there is a 28.5% chance that it is Beginner or Easy, 21.4% that it is Medium, 14.2% that it is Hard, and 7.1% that it is an Elite clue.
Also, if you already have a clue scroll in your bank, and it rolls that specific type of clue scroll, you simply just won’t get a clue nest, geode or bottle. This means that you cannot have a better chance of getting a certain type of clue by having other clues in your bank.
Probably the fastest way in the game to get any type of clue scroll is Implings. You can buy the Implings off the Grand Exchange and open them without any level requirements for a chance at a clue scroll and other random rewards.
Both baby and young implings give Beginner clue scrolls, 1 in 50 for baby, and 1 in 25 for young implings. It means that on average, 50 baby implings or 25 young implings will get you a clue scroll, which costs quite a lot of OSRS gold at this current time for a Beginner clue.
Baby implings (1 in 50) | Cost: 125K OSRS gold |
Young implings (1 in 25) | Cost: 62K OSRS gold |
Easy clues
Baby and young implings also still give Easy clues as well as Gourmet Implings. Below is the average price per clue. As you can see, it is quite a bit higher, and not entirely worth it for an Easy clue scroll.
Baby implings (1 in 50) | Cost: 250 K OSRS gold |
Young implings (1 in 50) | Cost: 125K OSRS gold |
Gourmet implings (1 in 25) | Cost: 92.5K OSRS gold |
H.A.M Members (2% Chance)
A very popular and great way to get Easy clues is pick-pocketing H.A.M members – both the female and male members. Both of them have the same chance – 1/50 (2% chance) of giving an Easy clue scroll. While pick-pocketing, there is a chance that you will get knocked out and sent outside of the H.A.M Hideout. Wearing H.A.M robes gives you a lower chance of getting kicked out, and by wearing the full set, there is a very, very slim chance that you’ll get kicked upstairs when you are knocked out.
Goblins, Men and Women (0.78% Chance)
Goblins, men and women all have a 1/128 drop rate (0.78% chance) for an Easy clue scroll, making them an easy and fast killing target to get clues. A lot of men can be found in the Edgeville house opposite the bank, and Lumbridge has a lot of Goblins.
A Dwarf Cannon can considerably speed up your kills here, and a Blowpipe or a fast attacking weapon will get the most kills per hour.
Thugs (1.56% Chance)
In my opinion, the best monster to kill for Easy clue scrolls is Thugs in level 1 Wilderness, inside of the Edgeville Dungeon. When killing these, you can bring an Imbued Ring of wealth that is created with a regular Ring of wealth and a Ring of wealth scroll which can be bought off the Grand Exchange or the Bounty hunter store.
Wearing this ring gives a double drop rate of clue scrolls when killing any monster in the Wilderness. So, pairing that with a decent weapon, you can get clue scrolls at a 1 in 64 drop rate instead of a 1 in 128 drop rate when you are killing the Thugs.
Medium clues
Ardougne Zoo (0.39% Chance)
I am going to start off with a bit of a random way to get one. With partial completion of Monkey Madness I and you can also do this if you have finished Monkey Madness, you can make your way back to the Ardougne Zoo with your Karamjan monkey greegree, your Monkey speak amulet, some RuneScape gold, and some noted Bananas – I would recommend at least 500.
You are going to wear the Greegree next to the Monkey minder and talk to him. Once he puts you into the Monkey cage, speak to the talk-able monkey until you pick him up. Then, take off your Greegree and talk to the monkey minder again and get let out.
Make your way to the general store nearby, and sell 50 bananas and buy them back to un-note them and use all of them on the monkey in your inventory. You can also do that at a bank.
For each banana that you use on him, there is a 1 in 256 chance that he spits out a Medium clue scroll. This can only be done once. So, once you get one clue out him, you will never get another one again. It takes only 5 minutes to get you a Medium clue doing this.
Implings
Implings are again the fastest way to get Medium clues, and there are 3 types of Implings giving Mediums: Earth, Essence, and Eclectics.
Earth impling (1 in 100) | Cost: 230K OSRS gold |
Essence impling (1 in 50) | Cost: 155K OSRS gold |
Eclectic impling (1 in 25) | Cost: 100K OSRS gold |
Eclectics are the most popular choice due to them being a lot cheaper to get a clue than the others. But with the recent clue update, the prices of these Implings have skyrocketed.
Killing Guards (0.78% chance)
There are also 2 monsters I recommend for Medium clues. The first is killing Guards (0.78% chance) in Varrock, Edgeville or Falador, and for all of these places, you can bring a cannon to considerably speed up your kills.
Ice Warriors (1.56% Chance)
A much faster way to get Mediums is Ice warriors at the Ice Plateau in the Wilderness because you can take advantage of the Ring of wealth (i), and you can also take a cannon here. But, of course, that will up your risk.
Hard clue scrolls
In terms of Hard clue scrolls, you can once again get them very quickly from Implings – Natures, Magpies and Ninjas to be specific. The average price per clue is considerably higher than the medium clue prices. So it is really not recommended for Hard clues at all unless you are loaded.
Nature impling (1 in 100) | Cost: 460K OSRS gold |
Magpie impling (1 in 50) | Cost: 1.1M OSRS gold |
Ninja impling (1 in 25) | Cost: 1M OSRS gold |
Skotizo Totem Farming (100% Chance)
A much more preferred method of getting an Elite clue but always gives a Hard clue is Skotizo Totem Farming. With the recent update of being able to get more than 1 totem at once, you can camp monsters in the Catacombs of Kourend to fight Skotizo, who has a 100% chance of giving a Hard clue as long as you don’t already have one. The drop rate for the totem pieces is an easy formula: 1/500-hitpoints
It is 1 in 500 minus the Hitpoints of the monster you are fighting. So if a monster has 100 Hitpoints, it has a 1 in 400 chance of a totem piece. With that, camping lower Hitpoint monsters is a lot better for getting Totem Pieces.
For example, if it takes you 2 minutes to kill a Brutal Black Dragon for the 1 in 185 drop rate of a totem piece, but in that same 2 minutes, you could kill 15 level 22 Skeletons. 15 Skeletons is a 1 in 32 chance of getting a totem piece using binomial probability. So, with that, the best monsters to farm are low level monsters like Skeletons, Hill Giants, especially the Ankous because the Ankous can be chinned or bursted for really fast kills.
There are 2 other monsters I recommend killing specifically just to get Hard clues:
Jellies (1.56% Chance)
Firstly, the Jellies in the Catacombs of Kourend have a 1 in 64 chance of dropping them.
Hellhounds (3.12% Chance)
Probably the cheapest and fastest way to get a Hard clue is by killing Hellhounds, and with a base drop rate of 1 in 64, you can make it a 1 in 32 drop rate by using an imbued Ring of wealth in the Wilderness. I recommend killing the Hellhounds near the Wilderness lever, and you should take no more than 3 items and some food with you.
Elite clues
Skotizo (20% Chance)
Skotizo farming gives a 1 in 5 chance of getting one, as well as the 100% chance of getting a Hard clue.
Barrows (3% Chance when kill all six brothers)
Another great source of Elite clue scrolls is Barrows, and for each brother you kill in Barrows, there is a 1 in 200 chance of getting an Elite clue when you loot the Chest downstairs. So, in total, killing all six brothers adds up to a 1 in 33 chance of getting an Elite clue scroll per Barrows run.
There is also a range of solo-able bosses that you can camp for Elite clues – Callisto, Venenatis, and Vet’ion have a 1 in 50 chance of an Elite clue with the imbued Ring of wealth.
Vorkath has a 1 in 65 chance of a clue, Zulrah is 1 in 75, and lastly, you can cannon and camp Black dragons in the Revenant caves for a 1 in 250 chance at an Elite clue, which is still quite common for such a high tier clue scroll.
Another way to get Elites is high level gambles at Barbarian assault, and if you are efficient and really good at Barbarian assault, this is a great way to get clues since they are only a 1 in 15 chance of getting one.
Dragon Implings (1/50 Chance, Cost 15M OSRS gp)
The last way to get Elites is Dragon Implings (1/50 Chance). You will lose quite a lot of OSRS gold doing this. But for those that want a super-fast Elite clue scroll, you can open around 50 Dragon implings for a massive bite of your bank account.
Master clues
The last clue in the game is Master clue scrolls, and there are two ways in the entire game you can get them. The fastest way is by getting them from another clue scroll. The chance of getting one varies through from Easy through to Elite clues.
Easy | 1/50 Chance |
Medium | 1/30 Chance |
Hard | 1/15 Chance |
Elite | 1/5 Chance |
The second way is by trading an Easy, Medium, Hard and Elite clue scroll to Watson, located in the Hosidius House. He will take all of them, and after giving all 4, you will receive a Master clue scroll. This is a great way to get rid of clue scrolls that you cannot or do not want to do. For example, if you are a Hardcore Ironman and you get a clue scroll that is in the Wilderness, you can give it to Watson to contribute towards a Master clue and then go get a new clue scroll.
Mimic clue scroll Boss
When opening an Elite or Master clue, there is a chance that it will turn into a mimic casket, allowing you to fight the mimic boss for a chance at some juicy clue scroll rewards.
A very important thing you need to know is to activate the chance of getting a mimic casket, you need to speak to the Strange casket upstairs in Watson’s house. If you do not talk to him, there is no chance of getting the mimic casket when you open an Elite or Master clue scroll.
