The Companion system was firstly introduced to The Elder Scrolls Online with the Blackwood Chapter in June 2021. The system lets you summon Companions through quests and helps you complete harder content alone. The Companions' assistance will be valuable when trying to defeat a more challenging opponent and get more ESO gold and valuable items for new players who haven't maxed out their characters. ArzyeL Gaming's video shows you how to unlock Companions, gear them up, and use their skills to assist you in combat.

Unlocking Companions

Companions are special NPC that can aid you in combat. You can use companions in ESO almost everywhere, except in PvP. At the moment, there are only four Companions you can unlock by completing specific quests:

ESO Companion System: Everything You Need to Know

Blackwood Companions: Bastian (left) and Mirri (right)

ESO High Isle Companions Isobel and Ember

High Isle Companions: Ember (left) and Isobel (right)

Bastian Hallix: A male Imperial that can be found in the Deepscorn Hollow objective along the southwest coast of Blackwood.

Mirri Elendis: A female Dark Elf found in the Doomvault Vulpinaz objective in North Blackwood.

Isobel Veloise: A female Breton Templar Companion from the High Isle Chapter. You can find Isobel near the Castle Navire point of interest, West of Confalon Bay, High Isle's Capital.

Ember: A female Khajiit Sorcerer Companion from the High Isle Chapter. You can find her near Tor Draioch in Eastern High Isle.

Once you complete the Companion quests, you can summon your Companions from the Collections Menu, Allies Tab. Talking to them opens their menu and dialogue options. Companions are unique with their likes and dislikes. By interacting with them, you can learn more about their past and unlock special companion background quests.

Rapport System

You can find information about their equipment, skills, cosmetics, and the rapport system in the Companion menu. Rapport determines how much a companion likes or dislikes you. Completing actions they like will increase rapport; doing something they disapprove will decrease it. If rapport drops too much, Companions may unsummon themselves and refuse to come to your aid for a while.

Companion Skills

Companions start at level 1 and level up as they adventure and gain XP along with you, up to level 20. They only have one bar of skills. But there are a variety of skill lines from which you can choose. As they level up, they unlock skills and skill slots.

There are plenty of other skills lines to choose from as well. Weapons, Armor, Guild, and Racial lines will all help you create a unique Companion Build.

•   Class Skill Lines increase with the combat level of the Companion

•   Weapon Skill Lines increase through combat based on the weapon equipped

•   Armor Skill Lines increase through combat based on the armor weight equipped

•   Guild Skill Lines increase by completing daily quests associated with the guild

•   Racial Skill Lines are unlocked from the beginning

Their gameplay relies on a skill priority and cooldown system. The Companion will attempt to cast each skill in order from the first ability on the bar to the last, then reset once all the cooldowns have expired.

They will engage your enemies and heal, buff, deal damage based on the skills you have chosen for them. They will even try to block or roll dodge to avoid getting hit. If they die, you can resurrect them like any player. Even if you don't resurrect them, they will revive automatically when the fight is over.

Companions can assume all roles in the game – DPS, Tank, Healer/Buffer hybrid, depending on the skills and equipment you choose.

Companions are a nice and fun addition for Solo. But they are not the best for more challenging content. You can control and send them after an enemy by using the existing Pet Commands (Y + mouse Lclick)

Companions' Equipment

They wear unique Companion gear, which means they can't use the same sets as Players. Their gear can be Light, Medium, Heavy, and up to Epic (purple) quality. The gear drops from enemies, and it is rarer than player gear. You have to carry Companion gear, which might be an issue.

Companion gear has its own Traits. These traits are:

•   Aggressive: Increases Companion Damage Done per piece equipped.

•   Augmented: Increases duration of all Companion Buffs and Debuffs per piece equipped.

•   Bolstered: Reduces Companion Damage Taken per piece equipped.

•   Focused: Increases Companion Critical Strike Rating per piece equipped.

•   Prolific: Increases Companion Ultimate Generation per piece equipped.

•   Quickened: Reduces Companion Ability Cooldowns per piece equipped.

•   Shattering: Increases Companion Penetration per piece equipped.

•   Soothing: Increases Companion Healing Done per piece equipped.

•   Vigorous: Increases Companion Maximum Health per piece equipped.

Companions' Cosmetics

You can customize your companions with your costumes and assign them one of your mounts to ride along with you. You can't equip them with hats, and in general, the head gear is hidden by default.

That is all you need to know about the Companion system. The High Isle Companions, Isobel and Ember are coming on June 6, 2022 for PC, Mac, and Stadia. Console players on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S will have to wait a bit longer, with the new chapter arriving on June 21.
