Interview With Kevin Vigue - Senior Software Engineer

Kevin discussed what will be coming with the lich King Expansion and how it will differ from its original run's previously rolled out content.

Different Versions

According to him, they have to deal with six different versions or formats of the MMORPG game as the modern game has been online for more than 10 years, and the return of the classic version further increased the complexity. This complexity will take time to document all the changes needed in the latest version.

Challenges

The classic version of WoW is built on the modern version, so bringing the code from the vanilla version to keep the experience as the original experience that players demanded and due to the popularity Blizzard had launched it. This also required the team to bring all of this into a singular experience. Thus making this new expansion a complex endeavor.

World Maps

He furthermore discussed the latest in-game World of Warcraft maps is some of the most complex to convert for the developers. "[The world map] system changed significantly over various patches," he iterated, "We built all these systems, and then later refactored them to make them more cohesive." The data from the maps from various eras of World of Warcraft are all different, and streamlining it was an unexpected challenge.

Spells and Other Iterations

The design and look of the spells have been formatted and further reformatted multiple times over the years and expansions. Most of these iterations were initially done by Zierhut. Kevin said, "And we're going to have to do it again!" he explained, "Now, we have the Lich King version that never got fixed." This all, coupled with importing code from Vanilla, increased the complexity of the development and may need to take more time to roll out with the best changes which can work best with the game's engine.

Balancing

Even though in the first iteration Death Knight as Blizzard introduced a hero in the Wrath of the Lich King, and most players thought it was OP for a long time, a lot of balancing needs to be done to improve that. This balancing will be done while keeping other things during the run of Wrath of Lich King as was in the Vanilla for all the players to have the best experience.

Servers Availability

Many WoW players want to experience the classic again and progress their heroes and stories like they used to Vanilla. In contrast, others want to keep things original, and they don't want the changes that come in the modern version to be included as he said, "There were people who wanted to go back and progress through the expansions again," also "And another group who just wanted the original game as it was. We want to make sure we preserve the promise to both of those groups."

This is why the team is keeping the Vanilla frozen in time until the Wrath of Lich King launches while the Burning Crusade servers will go on as it is. This will also include all the events like the Season of Mastery to keep things fresh and add others if there is a demand for them.

All About the Fans

WoW Classic was released due to the demand and support of the fans. These are the fans that will bring it along into the future. "This project has been community-driven–this project came to being because the community demanded it," he stated, "So what does the community want to see next?"

Many players can't wait to jump into the Wrath of Lich King Classic, and you can buy WotLK Classic gold after WoW WotLK Classis releases. TBC Classic's phase 5 is now live, and our orders of TBC Classic gold are more and more, so if you need it, you can buy it from MMOGAH.
